Protonorms are generalized raw scores that allow comparison between scores on all of the tests, but do not contain information as to where that score stands in any population; they are not standard scores or quantiles.
I.Q.s are ideal standard scores on a scale with 15 points per standard deviation, where the mean of the adult Western population is set at 100. The term "I.Q." is reserved for tests with a mixture of item types; for tests with only one item type, the term "Standard score" is used rather than "I.Q.", to stress the fact that such tests are less good indicators of general intelligence. A report on the current norming of protonorms to proportions outscored and I.Q.s is Adjustment of the protonorms to norms conversion.
